Opening Day Fun
Steel Hawg was planned to open in May, but it ended up opening a little later. The ride officially welcomed its first guests on July 5, 2008.
What Makes Steel Hawg Special?
This thrilling ride has a super steep drop that goes down at a 111-degree angle. That's even steeper than straight down! It also flips you upside down two times and has many exciting twists and turns.
One really cool thing about Steel Hawg is its "outside" turn. This means the track banks one way, but the coaster turns the opposite way. Imagine banking left but turning right – it's a unique feeling!
World Records and Steep Drops
When Steel Hawg first opened, it held the record for being the steepest roller coaster in the world! Its 111-degree drop was the steepest anywhere.
However, its record was broken a year later on July 4, 2009, by another coaster called Mumbo Jumbo in the United Kingdom. Mumbo Jumbo is also an El Loco model and has an even steeper 112-degree drop.
Even though it's no longer the world's steepest, Steel Hawg still has one of the steepest drops in North America. Only a few other coasters, like Cannibal in Utah and TMNT Shellraiser in New Jersey, have steeper drops.
Featured on TV
Steel Hawg is so exciting that it was even shown on TV! It appeared in a show called "Extreme Terror Rides 2" on Travel Discoveries. It was also ranked number 22 on the Travel Channel's list of "101 Greatest Thrills."
How Steel Hawg Operates
This roller coaster can run up to four trains at the same time. However, the park usually only uses one or two trains. This is because fewer people visit the park on some days, so they don't need all the trains running.
