Steinway D-274 facts for kids

The D-274, often just called the D, is the biggest concert grand piano made by Steinway & Sons. It was first built in its current design way back in 1884. This piano is the top choice for most concert pianists. You'll find it in almost every major concert hall and on most music recordings. One expert from the company guessed that over 90% of the concert grand pianos used worldwide are Steinway D-274s.
This huge piano measures 274 centimeters (about 9 feet) long and 157 centimeters (about 5 feet) wide. It also weighs a hefty 500 kilograms (about 1,100 pounds)! Because of its size, the D-274 is usually too big for most homes. It's truly built for the grand stage.
