History of Stella, Nebraska
Early Settlers and Railroad
People first settled in the Stella area around 1855. In August 1881, local farmers met and arranged for the Missouri Pacific Railroad to build tracks to their area. The town of Stella was planned that same year. It was named after Stella Clark, whose father owned the land where the town was built. The train tracks arrived in Stella in December 1881, and a train station was built in early 1882.
Growth of the Village
Stella officially became a village in 1882 and grew very fast. By the end of 1882, there were 25 businesses in Stella. In 1901, a special book called a "Souvenir" was published. It showed how Stella had grown, reaching its largest population around that time.
Back then, Stella had five churches: Baptist, Methodist, Christian, Lutheran, and Church of Christ Scientist. People could also join nine different clubs or other social groups. A school opened in 1884. A water system was started in 1887, and an opera house was built in 1898. Telephones were introduced in 1899, and plans for an electrical system were being made in 1901.

Education in Stella
Students in Stella attend schools that are part of the Humboldt Table Rock Steinauer Public Schools district. Before 2009, Stella had its own school operated by Southeast Nebraska Consolidated Schools. On January 1, 2009, this school district joined with Humboldt Table Rock Steinauer School District.
