History of Stendal
Stendal was first set up in 1867. It was named after a city called Stendal in Germany. The post office in Stendal started working in 1873.
Stendal High School and the Aces
In 1912, Lockhart Township built a new school building in Stendal. This building was used for both younger students and a new high school. The high school became officially recognized in 1923. It gave students from Stendal and nearby areas a chance to get a high school education.
Interestingly, Stendal High School did not have a gymnasium or a big assembly room. In its early years, the main extra activities were basketball and plays put on by the junior and senior classes.
Even during the Great Depression in 1932, the principal of Stendal High School was the highest paid among all six high school principals in Pike County.
The "Gym-less Wonders"
The sports teams at Stendal High were known as the 'Aces'. Even without their own gym, the basketball team was amazing! They were called the "Gym-less Wonders." They won three Pike County Tournaments in a row from 1927 to 1930. A star player named Kern McGlothlin helped them achieve these wins. He later became famous in the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame.
The Aces also won three Sectional titles in Boys' Basketball from the IHSAA. This is a big sports organization for high schools in Indiana. In the 1938-39 season, they made it to the finals of a bigger regional tournament before losing.
Kern McGlothlin later came back to Stendal to coach the Aces after playing college basketball. He had a very successful coaching career.
Stendal High School closed its doors in 1966. The very last student to graduate was Carolyn McFarland.
Education Today
Today, the main school district for the area is the Pike County School Corporation.
After Stendal High closed in 1966, its students went to Winslow High School. Then, in 1974, Winslow High School merged into Pike Central High School.
