Stenogyne is a special group of flowering plants. They belong to the mint family, just like the mint you might use for chewing gum or tea! These plants were first described in 1830. What makes them really special is that they are endemic to Hawaii. This means they grow naturally only in Hawaii and nowhere else in the world!
Discovering Stenogyne Plants
Scientists first learned about Stenogyne plants in 1830. A botanist named George Bentham was the first to officially describe them. These plants are part of a big family called Lamiaceae, which is known for its square stems and often fragrant leaves.
Where Stenogyne Lives
All the different types of Stenogyne plants are found only in the beautiful islands of Hawaii. This makes them very unique and important to Hawaii's natural environment. Being endemic means they have adapted perfectly to the Hawaiian climate and soil over many, many years.
