Stenogyne kealiae is a very rare flowering plant. It belongs to the mint family. People also call it Keal's stenogyne. This special plant is found only in Hawaii. Specifically, it grows only on the island of Kauai. Because it is so rare, the United States government officially listed it as an endangered species in 2010. This means it is in danger of disappearing forever.

About Keal's Stenogyne

Keal's stenogyne is a type of vine. Its leaves are shaped like a spearhead. They can grow up to 15 centimeters (about 6 inches) long. The flowers of this plant are a beautiful purple-pink color.

Where it Lives

This plant is endemic to Kauai. This means it naturally grows nowhere else in the world. It is a very unique part of Hawaii's nature.

Why it's Endangered

Sadly, there are not many Keal's stenogyne plants left. Only 5 groups, or "populations," of these plants still exist on Kauai. In total, there are no more than about 200 individual plants.

Main Threats to the Plant

Several things make it hard for Keal's stenogyne to survive:

  • Wild Animals: Animals like feral pigs, goats, and mule deer roam freely. These animals are called ungulates because they have hooves. They can eat or trample the plants, causing a lot of damage.
  • New Plants: Other plants that are not native to Hawaii have been brought there. These are called introduced plant species. One example is daisy fleabane. These new plants can grow very fast and take over the space and resources that Keal's stenogyne needs to live.

Scientists and conservationists are working hard to protect this rare Hawaiian plant. They hope to help it survive for future generations.
