Education
Stephanie Moser finished her first degree, a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), in 1989 at La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia. Later, in 1995, she earned her Ph.D. in archaeology from the University of Sydney. Her Ph.D. research was about how archaeology became a professional field in Australia.
Career
Since 1995, Professor Moser has taught archaeology at the University of Southampton in England. She is also a member of the Society of Antiquaries of London, which is a group that studies old things and history. She was on the Council for this Society from 2013 to 2016. She is also part of the Antiquity Trust, which helps publish an important archaeology magazine called Antiquity.
Research
Professor Moser's research explores many interesting areas in archaeology.
How Archaeology Became a Profession
For her Ph.D. work, Stephanie Moser studied how archaeology became a professional job in Australia. She looked at how professional archaeologists developed new ways of working. Her research showed that archaeologists felt they needed to go "into the field" (meaning, do fieldwork like digging) to be considered "real" archaeologists. This helped separate them from people who studied archaeology as a hobby.
Visuals in Archaeology
One of Professor Moser's first big research projects was about how archaeology is shown visually. She studied how a single drawing of a Neanderthal (an ancient human species) greatly influenced how we imagine them today. This shows how art can shape our understanding of history.
Ancient Egypt and Community Work
Since the late 1990s, Professor Moser has also studied how Ancient Egypt was shown in England during the 1800s. She also wrote about how archaeologists can work better with local communities when studying their heritage. In 2002, she published a paper that explained how archaeologists should include local people when exploring their cultural history. This idea came from her own training in Australia, where she worked with Australia's Indigenous people.
Museums and Knowledge
Professor Moser also researches how museum displays help us learn. She looks at how museums choose what to show, how art is collected, and how archaeological finds are presented to the public.
The Art of Archaeology
In 2019, Professor Moser was looking into the history of archaeological illustration. This is the art of drawing archaeological finds. She studied how the Society of Antiquaries of London used these drawings to help with their research. She also researched Joseph Bonomi the Younger, an Egyptologist and artist, and how his work helped people understand ancient Egypt.
