Stephen D. Barnett (born around 1969) is an important officer in the United States Navy. He is a highly skilled naval flight officer, which means he helps navigate and operate aircraft for the Navy.
Currently, he is in charge of Navy Region Hawaii and also leads the Navy Closure Task Force - Red Hill. Before these roles, he commanded other important Navy regions, like Navy Region Southwest and Navy Region Northwest.

Early Life and Learning
Stephen D. Barnett grew up in Columbia, Tennessee. He went to Tennessee State University and earned a degree in mechanical engineering. Later, he studied at Troy State University and received a Master of Business Administration (MBA).
In 1991, he joined the Navy after completing training at Aviation Officer Candidate School. This is where he officially became an officer.
Barnett has had many exciting jobs in the Navy, both at sea and on land.
Flying Missions at Sea
Early in his career, Barnett joined Patrol Squadron (VP) 46 in Washington state. He worked as a naval flight officer, helping with missions.
He also served on the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN-74). Later, he became a department head for VP-5 in Florida.
As the leader of VP-47 in Hawaii, he guided his squadron on a big mission. They deployed to Japan and Iraq at the same time. His team flew over 250 missions to support Operation Iraqi Freedom. During this time, they completed more than 950 flights, totaling 5,000 hours in the air!
Important Roles on Land
Barnett has also held many key positions on land. He worked at the Bureau of Naval Personnel, helping assign over 1,000 Navy pilots to their jobs. He also taught new naval flight officers at VP-30.
He helped the Joint Chiefs of Staff evaluate and develop requirements for joint military forces. He also worked for the Chief of Naval Operations, helping to manage the Navy's aviation budget.
Barnett served as the commanding officer of Naval Base Coronado in California. He also worked as the chief of staff for Commander, Navy Region Southeast and Commander, Navy Installations Command. Later, he became the deputy commander of Navy Installations Command.
In March 2020, Barnett took command of Navy Region Northwest. He led this region until June 2021.
In March 2022, he was given command of Navy Region Hawaii. He also handed over his command of Navy Region Southwest to another officer in May 2022.
In February 2023, Stephen D. Barnett was nominated for a promotion to rear admiral. The United States Senate confirmed his promotion on December 5, 2023.
