Stephen Edwin Chandler (born November 20, 1841, died February 1, 1919) was a brave American soldier. He fought in the American Civil War, a very important time in U.S. history. Chandler earned the Medal of Honor, which is the highest award for bravery a soldier can receive in the United States. He got this award for his actions during a battle in Virginia on April 5, 1865. He received the honor on April 4, 1898.
Stephen Chandler's Life and Service
Stephen Chandler was born in Battle Creek, Michigan, on November 20, 1841. When he was 19 years old, he joined the army. This was in May 1861, at the start of the American Civil War.
He first served with the 24th New York Infantry. This group of soldiers fought on foot. After two years, he finished his service with them in May 1863.
But Stephen wasn't done fighting. In October 1863, he joined the 24th New York Cavalry. This time, he was part of a group that fought on horseback. Just two months later, he was promoted to Quartermaster Sergeant. This job meant he helped manage supplies for his unit.
In June 1865, near the end of the war, he moved to the 1st New York Provisional Cavalry. He finished his military service the next month.
Stephen Chandler passed away on February 1, 1919. He was 77 years old. He is buried at Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
