Stephen Moulsdale's Early Life and Education
Stephen Moulsdale was the oldest son of a priest, the Reverend T. H. P. Moulsdale. Stephen first went to school in Sligo, Ireland. Later, he studied at St Aidan's Theological College in Birkenhead, England.
In 1896, Stephen became a priest. His first job was working at St Chad's Church in Everton, Liverpool. He continued his studies at Durham University, where he earned a special degree in religious studies in 1903. In 1908, he married Mary Frideswide, whose father was also a school headmaster. Sadly, Mary passed away in 1933.
Leading Educational Institutions
Stephen Moulsdale played a huge role in setting up and running colleges.
Starting St Chad's Hostel
In 1903, Stephen was made the vice-principal of St Chad's Hostel in Hooton Pagnell. A year later, in 1904, he became its principal, which means he was in charge. This hostel was a place where students could live and study.
Founding St Chad's College
Also in 1904, Stephen Moulsdale helped start a new college called St Chad's Hall at Durham University. This new college was like a sister school to the hostel he was already leading. He became the first principal of St Chad's Hall, managing both places at the same time.
In 1916, the hostel in Hooton Pagnell closed. All the teaching then moved to the college in Durham. In 1918, St Chad's Hall was renamed St Chad's College, which it is still known as today.
A Long Career in Leadership
Stephen Moulsdale stayed as the principal of St Chad's College until 1937. This means he led the college for over 30 years! During some of these years, from 1934 to 1936, he also served as the Vice-Chancellor of Durham University. This was a very important job, as the Vice-Chancellor is like the chief executive officer of the entire university.
