Stephen van Rensselaer's Life
Early Years and Family
Stephen van Rensselaer was born on March 23, 1707. His father was Kiliaen van Rensselaer, and his mother was Maria van Cortlandt. Stephen grew up in his family's large manor house. This house was located just north of a place that would later become Albany, New York.
Leading the Manor of Rensselaerswyck
The "Manor of Rensselaerswyck" was a huge estate, like a very large farm or land area. It was first set up by the Dutch in what is now New York. A "Patroon" was the person in charge of this large estate. They were like a landlord or a leader of the community.
Stephen's older brother passed away without getting married or having children. Because of this, Stephen became the next leader. He took on the role of the seventh Patroon of Rensselaerswyck. He also became the fourth Lord of the Manor. He served in this important position from 1745 until his death in 1747.
His Family and Legacy
Stephen van Rensselaer married Elizabeth Groesbeck on July 25, 1729. They had several children together. Their children included:
- Elizabeth van Rensselaer (born 1734), who later married General Abraham Ten Broeck.
- Stephen van Rensselaer II (1742–1769), who became the fifth Lord of Rensselaerswyck. He married Catherine Livingston.
- They also had four other children.
When Stephen van Rensselaer I passed away in 1747, his son, Stephen van Rensselaer II, was still too young to take over. So, Stephen's brother-in-law, Abraham Ten Broeck, helped manage the Manor of Rensselaerswyck. He continued to do so until 1784, when Stephen van Rensselaer II was old enough to take full control.
