Occupation Patroon

Jeremias van Rensselaer (born March 18, 1705 – died 1745) was an important figure in early New York. He was the son of Kiliaen van Rensselaer, who was also a patroon, and Maria van Cortlandt. Jeremias took on a big role in managing a large area of land called Rensselaerswyck.

Leading Rensselaerswyck

Jeremias van Rensselaer became the sixth Patroon of Rensselaerswyck in 1726. A Patroon was like a landlord who owned a huge piece of land. They had special rights and duties in the Dutch colony of New York. Jeremias was also known as the third Lord of the Manor, which was another title for the person in charge of this large estate.

  • Jeremias also served in the assembly for the Manor. This assembly was a group of people who helped make laws and decisions for the area. He was part of this assembly from September 1726 to September 1743.

After Jeremias, his brother, Stephen van Rensselaer I, took over as the next Lord of Rensselaerswyck. Stephen became the seventh Patroon and fourth Lord of the Manor.
