Steve Beaton (born April 5, 1964) is a famous English darts player who used to play professionally. He won the BDO World Darts Championship in 1996 and was once ranked the best darts player in the world!

Early Life and Career Start

Steve Beaton was born in Coventry, England. He started his journey in darts and quickly became known for his skills.

Joining the BDO World Championship

Steve first played in the BDO World Darts Championship in 1992. Back then, it was the main darts championship for everyone. He lost his first game, but he didn't give up!

In 1993, he surprised everyone by beating Dennis Priestley, a top player and former world champion. He also defeated another champion, Bob Anderson. Steve made it all the way to the semi-finals, which was a great achievement. After this, he decided to become a full-time professional darts player.

Winning the World Masters

In 1993, there was a big change in darts. Some players, including Steve, joined a new group called the WDC (now PDC). This meant they couldn't play in BDO tournaments anymore. But Steve kept playing well and won the important Winmau World Masters tournament, beating Les Wallace in the final.

Becoming a World Champion

Steve was a top player for the BDO World Championships in 1994 and 1995. However, he lost in the first round both times, even after being ahead in the games.

But in 1996, everything changed! Steve played amazingly and won the BDO World Championship. He beat many strong players, including John Part and Andy Fordham, before winning against Richie Burnett in the final. This was a huge moment in his career.

Close Calls and Later BDO Years

In 1997, Steve almost made it to the final again. He had a very close game in the semi-finals, missing a shot that would have won him the match. His opponent, Marshall James, then took the win.

Steve won many other tournaments during his time in the BDO, like the Dutch, Danish, Belgian, and Swedish Opens. He continued to play in the BDO World Championship until 2001. After that, he decided to fully switch to playing in the PDC World Darts Championship.

PDC Career Highlights

When Steve moved to the PDC, it was a new challenge. He didn't reach the quarter-finals of the PDC World Championship, but he often made it to the Round of 16. His best results were in 2002, 2004, and 2020.

Staying in the Top Ranks

Even though he didn't win a world title in the PDC, Steve usually stayed in the top 32 players in the world. This shows how consistent he was. He reached the semi-finals in four big PDC tournaments:

  • The 2001 World Matchplay
  • The 2004 UK Open
  • The 2004 World Grand Prix
  • The 2010 Grand Slam of Darts

Beating a Legend

One of Steve's most famous wins was in 2010 at the Grand Slam of Darts. He was playing against Phil Taylor, who was a three-time champion and considered one of the best darts players ever. Steve was behind in the game but came back to win 16-14. This was a truly memorable victory!

Winning a PDC Title

In 2009, Steve's form improved a lot. He won his first PDC title in almost nine years at the Players Championship in Nuland. He also finished second in the European Championship, losing to Phil Taylor in the final.

Recent Years and Retirement

Steve continued to play in many tournaments, showing great skill and determination. In 2013, he won the German Darts Masters, his first title in nearly four years. He played consistently, reaching quarter-finals and semi-finals in various events.

In December 2023, Steve Beaton announced that 2024 would be his last year playing professional darts. He planned to retire at the end of the year.

Final Appearances

At the 2024 World Championship, Steve won his first game but lost in the second round. He also played in his final UK Open event in 2024.

For his last Pro Tour appearance, Steve received a standing ovation from everyone. Many fellow players dressed up like him from the 1990s to celebrate his amazing career.

Steve's Nicknames

Steve Beaton is known by a cool nickname: The Bronzed Adonis. This name comes from his tanned look, which he keeps up all year round! His entrance music when he walks onto the stage is "Stayin' Alive" by the Bee Gees.

He has also been called The Marathon Man because he runs marathons to stay fit and raise money for charity. Another old nickname was Magnum P.I. because some people thought he looked like the actor Tom Selleck from that TV show.

Personal Life

Steve Beaton lives in North Walsham, England, with his wife, Nanette. They got married in 1993. He is a big fan of the English football team Coventry City.
