Steve Mapsalak's Political Journey
Steve Mapsalak started his political career by being elected to the Nunavut government. He worked hard to represent the people of his region.
First Election Win in 2004
Steve Mapsalak first became an MLA in the 2004 Nunavut general election. He won the election for the area known as Akulliq. This was his first time serving in the Legislative Assembly.
Close Election in 2008
In the 2008 Nunavut general election, Steve Mapsalak ran for re-election. The results were very close. He was almost defeated by another candidate, John Ningark.
The Recount and Revote
Because the election was so close, a special check was done. This is called a judicial recount. After counting all the votes again, both Steve Mapsalak and John Ningark had the exact same number of votes: 157 each!
When there's a tie, a new election has to happen. This is called a revote. The revote took place on March 2. In this second vote, John Ningark won. He received 193 votes, while Steve Mapsalak received 179 votes.
Returning to the Assembly in 2013
Steve Mapsalak ran for election again in the 2013 Nunavut general election. This time, he was elected back into the Legislative Assembly. He won against Johnny Ningeongan.
He was elected for a different area called Aivilik. The boundaries of the areas that MLAs represent can sometimes change. When this happens, it's called a redistributed district.
Other Important Roles
Before becoming an MLA, Steve Mapsalak held other important jobs. He was the mayor of his hometown, Repulse Bay. A mayor is the leader of a town or city.
He also served as the chair of the board of governors for Nunavut Arctic College. This college helps people in Nunavut get an education and learn new skills.
