History of the Stewart-Woolley House

Who Was Levi Stewart?

The house was first built for a man named Levi Stewart. He moved to Kanab in 1870. Before building this house, he lived in an old fort. Stewart and his family joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1837. This happened when they lived in Illinois.

Levi Stewart was a leader in his community. He served as the local bishop, which is a church leader. The house he built was designed in two cool styles. These were the Gothic Revival and Late Victorian styles.

The Woolley Family and the House

In 1889, Edwin D. Woolley bought the house. He was from Nauvoo, Illinois. Edwin Woolley had a large family. He lived in this house with his first wife, Emma Geneva Bentley, and their children.

One of their children was Mary E. Woolley Chamberlain. She became very important for Kanab. Mary served as the mayor of Kanab from 1911 to 1913. This was a big deal for a woman at that time!
