The Stewart Memorial Presbyterian Church, now called the Redeemer Missionary Baptist Church, is a very special building in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It is located in the Lyndale neighborhood. This church was built in 1910 and has a unique design style. It is an example of Prairie School architecture.

A Special Kind of Church Design

What is Prairie School Architecture?

Prairie School is a style of building design that became popular in the early 1900s. It was created by architects who wanted buildings to fit in with the flat landscapes of the American Midwest. These buildings often have flat roofs and wide, overhanging eaves. They also feature strong horizontal lines.

This style was very unusual for churches. Most churches at that time had tall steeples or bell towers. They also had many traditional decorations. The Stewart Memorial Presbyterian Church is different. It has a flat roof and wide eaves. It does not have a bell tower. This makes it stand out from other churches built around the same time.

Who Designed This Unique Church?

The church's design was inspired by the Unity Temple in Oak Park, Illinois. That famous building was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, a very well-known architect. The Stewart Memorial Presbyterian Church was designed by the firm of Purcell & Feick. George Grant Elmslie later became a partner in this firm.

The church was named after Reverend David Stewart. Its first members came from the First Presbyterian Church.

Inside the Church

The main part of the church is shaped like a cube. This area is an auditorium where people gather. Light comes into the room from a wall of windows facing east. These windows have a soft green tint.

There is also a narrower section of the church. This part has a deep balcony that stretches towards the south. The decorations inside the church are simple. They mostly use wooden strips arranged in cool geometric patterns. The outside of the church is made of brick and stucco.

A New Chapter for the Church

The Stewart Memorial Presbyterian Church was recognized for its special design. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. This list helps protect important historical buildings.

In 1988, the Redeemer Missionary Baptist Church bought the building. They worked hard to restore and update it. They raised over $2 million for this important project. The building continues to serve its community today.
