Stickney is the biggest crater found on Phobos. Phobos is a small moon that orbits around the planet Mars. This large crater is located at 1 degree North and 49 degrees West on Phobos. It measures about 9 km (5.6 mi) across. Stickney crater covers a very large part of the moon's surface.
What is Stickney Crater?
Stickney crater is a huge bowl-shaped hole on Phobos. It was made when something big, like an asteroid, crashed into the moon a long, long time ago. Because Phobos is so small, this impact left a very noticeable mark. The crater is so big that it makes Phobos look a bit like a giant golf ball with a huge dent!
Who Was Angeline Stickney?
The Stickney crater is named after Chloe Angeline Stickney Hall. She was the wife of Asaph Hall. Asaph Hall was a famous astronomer who discovered Phobos in 1877. Naming the crater after his wife was a way to honor her.
