Stillwater State Park is a cool place to visit in Groton, Vermont. It's a state park located right on the beautiful Lake Groton. This park is part of the larger Groton State Forest. You'll find it close to other fun spots like the Groton Nature Center and Boulder Beach State Park.

At Stillwater State Park, you can go camping or have a picnic. It's also a great place for water activities on Lake Groton. The park was built a long time ago in the 1930s. It was created by workers from the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). The park is usually open from late May to early September. There is a small fee to enter and camp.

What Can You Do at Stillwater State Park?

Stillwater State Park is located in northern Groton. It's on the west side of Lake Groton. The park covers about 57 acres. The lake is surrounded by vacation homes and other state parks. These include the Groton Nature Center and Big Deer State Park.

When you enter the park, a road leads to different areas. You can find places for camping and fun activities.

  • One camping area was first built as a picnic spot by the CCC.
  • Another, larger camping area has places for day visitors.

The park has many places to stay. There are 62 spots for tents or RVs. There are also 17 lean-tos, which are shelters with three walls. All the restrooms have hot showers. You can also find a special station to empty RV waste.

There's a swimming beach where you can cool off. You can also launch your boat from the dock. The park has a play area for kids. There's also a shelter for groups. You can easily get to hiking trails from the park.

How Stillwater State Park Was Built

The buildings and areas in Stillwater State Park were built in 1938. This work was done by the CCC. The state of Vermont started buying this forest land in 1919. The CCC also helped build Vermont Route 232. This road helps people get into the forest.

The CCC workers built the park roads. They also made a picnic area and a camping loop. Some of their original work is still there today. This includes the ranger's house and a picnic shelter. You can also see many stone fireplaces. Several lean-to camping shelters were also built by them.

The picnic area was changed into a campground in the late 1960s. The southern camping loop was also made bigger then. In 2002, the park was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is because its CCC buildings are very well-preserved.
