Exploring Stintino's Location
Stintino is found on a special piece of land called a peninsula. This peninsula stretches out from the Nurra plain towards Asinara Island. Asinara Island is part of the Asinara National Park. Stintino is the closest place to catch a boat to visit this amazing park.
The town of Stintino shares a border with Sassari. The very tip of the Stintino peninsula, where the town is, faces Asinara Island. Asinara Island itself belongs to the nearby municipality of Porto Torres.
The Story of Stintino's Beginning
Stintino was officially started on August 14, 1885. This happened because the Italian Government decided to use the nearby Asinara Island for a special purpose. They wanted to use it as a place to keep people who might be sick away from others. It also became a place where prisoners were sent.
At that time, about 45 families lived on Asinara Island. They worked as farmers, raised animals, and fished for a living. These families had created small villages on the island. But they had to leave their homes because of the government's decision.
The government gave these families some help to start new lives. They used these resources to build their new town, Stintino. There is a main square in Stintino called 'Piazza dei 45'. This square is named to honor those original 45 families who founded the town.
