A Look Back: The 1949 Plane Accident

On January 17, 1949, an important event happened on Stob na Boine Druim-fhinn. A United States Army Air Forces plane, a Boeing B-29 Superfortress, crashed into the side of the mountain. This plane was on a flight from England to Iceland.

The accident happened at 9:50 AM. All twenty people on board the aircraft passed away. The exact reason for the crash was not fully known. However, very bad weather and heavy ice on the plane were thought to be major causes. This event is a reminder of the dangers faced by early aviators.
