Stockdale is a small, unincorporated community located in the state of Indiana, United States. It's found across two different counties: Wabash County and Miami County. Being "unincorporated" means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's governed by the larger county.

History of Stockdale

Stockdale was first planned and settled in the year 1837. A person named Thomas Goudy was responsible for "laying out" the community. This means he designed where streets and buildings would go.

Railroad's Impact on Stockdale

A big change happened when the Eel River Railroad was built. This railroad was very important for transportation and trade. However, the tracks were built to go to a nearby town called Roann, not directly through Stockdale. Because the railroad didn't come to Stockdale, the community started to become less important. Many people and businesses moved to places with better access to the railroad. This led to a decline in Stockdale's growth and activity.

Stockdale Mill's Special Recognition

Even though the community faced challenges, one of its important historical buildings, the Stockdale Mill, received special recognition. In 2004, the Stockdale Mill was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list includes buildings, sites, and objects that are important in American history. Being on this list helps protect the mill and highlights its historical value.
