The Stockholm School of Economics (SSE), also known as Handelshögskolan i Stockholm (HHS) in Swedish, is a private business school. It is located in the city of Stockholm, Sweden. SSE offers different study programs for students who want to learn about business and economics. These include programs for bachelor's degrees, master's degrees, and even PhDs.

SSE is a well-respected school, recognized by an organization called EQUIS. It is also part of the CEMS network. SSE has helped start other schools, like SSE Riga in Latvia and SSE Russia in Russia. It also has a research center in Tokyo, Japan, focused on Japanese studies.

History of the Stockholm School of Economics

The Stockholm School of Economics was officially started in 1909. It was founded because Sweden was quickly becoming more industrial. There was a growing need for educated people to work in businesses and manage companies. The school has always kept strong connections with the business world.

How the School Started

A banker named Knut Agathon Wallenberg helped a lot to start the school. In 1903, he gave money to help convince people that a business school was needed in Stockholm. At that time, some people didn't think highly of business or trade. Wallenberg believed it was important to improve how people viewed merchants and business.

To help make the case for the school, a doctor named Helmer Keys traveled around Europe. He gathered information to show why a business school would be good and necessary. His report helped spread the idea of starting the school in Stockholm.

Many people from Stockholm's business community helped fund the school. They paid money each year to become founding members. These founders included merchants, bank directors, and factory owners. Most of them were men, but one woman was also listed.

Famous Economists from SSE

Even though it was a business school, economics was a very important subject from the beginning. Two of the most famous scholars from the Stockholm School of Economics are economists Eli Heckscher and Bertil Ohlin.

Eli Heckscher
Professor Eli Heckscher helped create economic history as a separate field of study.
  • Eli Heckscher was a professor from 1909 to 1945. He is known for starting economic history as its own academic subject. His work, Svenskt Arbete och Liv, is a key book in this field.
  • Bertil Ohlin was also a professor of economics. He was a leader in a group of economists called the Stockholm school. This group had a big impact on Sweden's economic policies after World War II. Heckscher and Ohlin together created the Heckscher–Ohlin model, which is a well-known model for international trade. Bertil Ohlin even won the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 1977.

Studying at SSE

SSE is a member of the Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs (APSIA). This group includes schools that focus on public policy and international studies.

How to Get In

To get into the Master's programs at SSE, students usually need good scores on tests like the GMAT and TOEFL iBT. These scores show that applicants are ready for the challenging studies. In 2012/2013, many students applied for the Master's programs, so getting accepted was competitive.

Grading System

SSE uses a 5-point grading scale. The grades are:

  • Excellent (5.0)
  • Very Good (4.0)
  • Good (3.5)
  • Pass (3.0)
  • Fail (0.0)

Students can also earn special awards. An "Outstanding Achievement" award is given to students who get an "Excellent" final grade in a course for the first time. The top 10% of students in the Bachelor's programs who finish their studies on time receive the "President's List" award.
