History of the School
The Stockholm School of Economics was founded in 1909. At that time, Sweden was growing quickly, and there was a big need for smart business leaders and company managers. A banker named Knut Agathon Wallenberg helped start the school because he believed it was important for the country to have well-educated business people.
The school was created through the efforts of many people in Stockholm's business community. They wanted a top-level school, similar to the Handelshochschule schools in Germany. From the very beginning, the school focused on teaching economics, which is the study of how people make, buy, and sell things.
Famous Teachers and Ideas

Two of the most famous teachers at SSE were Eli Heckscher and Bertil Ohlin. They were both brilliant economists.
- Eli Heckscher was a professor who helped create the field of economic history. This subject looks at how the economy has changed over time.
- Bertil Ohlin was another important professor. He and Heckscher created a famous idea called the Heckscher–Ohlin model. This is a theory that helps explain how countries trade with each other. For his work, Bertil Ohlin won the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 1977.
These professors were part of a group called the Stockholm School. Their ideas were very important in shaping Sweden's economy and creating the modern Swedish welfare state, which is a system where the government helps take care of its citizens.
