The Stone of Jacob is a special stone mentioned in the Book of Genesis from the Bible. It's known as the stone that the important leader Jacob used as a pillow while he was sleeping. This happened in a place that was later called Bet-El. During his sleep, Jacob had an amazing dream, and after he woke up, he decided to make the stone sacred to God. More recently, some stories in Scotland and a belief system called British Israelism have also talked about this stone.

Jacob's Dream and the Stone
The story of Jacob and the stone is found in the Bible, in Genesis, Chapter 28:10-22. Jacob was running away from his older twin brother, Esau. Jacob had tricked Esau out of a special blessing from their father, Isaac.
While Jacob was traveling, he stopped to rest for the night in a place called Luz. He picked up some stones and used them as a pillow to sleep on.
While he slept, Jacob had a very important dream. He saw a tall ladder reaching from the ground all the way up to heaven. On this ladder, angels of God were going up and down. In his dream, God stood above the ladder and spoke to Jacob. God promised Jacob that the land he was sleeping on would belong to him and his future family. God also promised that Jacob's family would become very large, like the dust of the earth, and would spread in all directions. God said that through Jacob and his family, all the families on Earth would be blessed. God also promised to be with Jacob and protect him wherever he went, and to bring him back to this land.
When Jacob woke up, he was amazed and a little scared. He said, "This place is truly the house of God, and it is the gate to heaven!" Because of this, he named the place Bet-El, which means "House of God" in Hebrew. Jacob then took the stone he had used as a pillow and set it upright like a monument. He poured oil on top of it to make it sacred to God. He also made a promise to God about returning safely to this land in the future.

The Stone of Scone Connection
Some Scottish legends connect the Stone of Jacob to another famous stone called the Stone of Scone. This Stone of Scone was traditionally used for crowning Scottish kings many centuries ago. These legends say that the Stone of Jacob was brought to Ireland by the prophet Jeremiah and then later moved to Scotland. A writer from the 1600s, John Speed, even called the stone used in the coronation of King James I at Westminster Abbey by its Latin name, saxum Jacobi, which means "Jacob's stone."
British Israelism Beliefs
These legends are also important in a belief system called British Israelism. People who believe in British Israelism think that the British royal family are descendants of the ancient King David from the Bible. They often connect the Stone of Scone to the Stone of Jacob as part of their beliefs.
From 1308 until 1996, the Stone of Scone was kept inside the King Edward's Chair at Westminster Abbey in London. This chair was used for the coronations of British monarchs. On December 23, 2020, the Scottish Government announced that the Stone of Scone would be moved to a new special place called the 'Hall of Destiny' in Perth, Scotland, which is close to its original home in Scone.
