This historic district covers about 1,400 acres (5.7 square kilometers). It includes part of the Stony Creek mainland. This area is along Thimble Islands Road, between Route 146 and Long Island Sound. The district also includes all of the amazing Thimble Islands.

What Makes This Area Special?

The Stony Creek–Thimble Islands Historic District is known for a few cool things. You can find many homes built in a style called "Stick style." These houses often have decorative wooden patterns on their outside walls.

The district also has many old resort properties on the Thimble Islands. These were once popular places for people to stay during their summer vacations.

History of Stony Creek Village

The village of Stony Creek grew a lot in the late 1800s. It became a popular summer getaway spot. People would come here to enjoy the coast and relax.

Stony Creek is also famous for its old granite quarries. These were places where large stones were dug out of the ground. Many workers lived nearby in special housing built for them.

A Notable House: The Stick Style House

Inside this historic district, there's a very special house. It's called the Stick Style House at Stony Creek. You can find it at 34 Prospect Hill. This house is so important that it's listed separately on the National Register of Historic Places.

The house was built in 1878. It was designed by a famous architect named Henry Austin. His design shows off the unique features of the Stick style.
