The Stony River Reservoir was once a large lake in Grant County, West Virginia. It was built a long time ago, in 1888. This reservoir was created on the Stony River.

Why Was It Built?

The reservoir was built by a company called Westvaco. Their main goal was to get water for their pulp mill. A pulp mill is a factory that turns wood into pulp. This pulp is then used to make paper products.

Who Lived Nearby?

A man named William Luke had his summer home right by the lake. He was likely a leader at the Westvaco company.

The Dam's Problems

The dam that held back the water for the reservoir had some issues. It was not as strong as it needed to be. Because of this, the reservoir had to be emptied sometimes. This allowed workers to fix parts of the dam.

What Happened to the Dam?

Over time, the middle part of the dam was taken down. This meant the reservoir could no longer hold water. The water drained out, and the Stony River now flows freely again. Most of the dam's sides still stand today. They are on either side of the river.
