Storuman is a lovely town in Sweden. It is located in the northern part of the country, in a region called Lapland. Storuman is also the main town of Storuman Municipality.
The town sits right by the Ume River. It is also at the southeastern end of a big lake called Lake Storuman. In 2010, about 2,207 people lived here. The local Sami people have their own names for the town: Southern Sami: Luspie in Southern Sami and Lusspie in Ume Sami.
A Look Back in Time
People believe that the first Swedish settlers arrived in the Storuman area around 1741. They came from a town called Vilhelmina to the south. The place was first known as 'Luspen'. This name came from a local river.
For a long time, Luspen was a small village. By 1912, only about 40 people lived there. They lived in eight farms. But things changed a lot around 1924. A new railway station was built as part of the Inland Line. This helped the village grow very quickly.
Storuman soon became an important center. It was known for making hydroelectric power. This is electricity made from moving water. The town also became important for the timber industry, which uses wood from trees. Later, Storuman also became a popular place for tourists to visit.
The town has a special symbol called a heraldic shield. It shows a "Wild Man." This symbol is based on the old name of the village. It also represents the strength and determination of the people from Lapland.
