Storylines Notable Book Awards facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Storylines Notable Book Awards are a special list of amazing books for kids and young people from New Zealand. Each year, these awards celebrate the best books written and illustrated by New Zealanders that came out in the past year. It's like a "best of" list to help you find awesome reads!

How the Awards Started

The Storylines Notable Book Awards first began in 1999. Since then, they have been announced every single year.

The list of notable books is usually shared in March. The actual awards are given out at the Storylines Margaret Mahy Awards Day. This event also celebrates other important awards, like the Margaret Mahy Medal and Lecture, the Storylines Tessa Duder Award, Tom Fitzgibbon Award, Joy Cowley Award, and the Gaelyn Gordon Award for a Much-Loved Book. This big celebration happens in Auckland around April 2nd, which is International Children’s Book Day and the birthday of famous storyteller Hans Christian Andersen.

How Books Are Chosen

Books are picked for the Storylines Notable Book Awards by a group of experts. These experts are chosen by Storylines and can include writers, illustrators, teachers, librarians, and university professors.

They look at several things when choosing books:

  • How well the story is written.
  • How the book is designed and edited.
  • The plot (what happens in the story).
  • The characters (who the story is about).
  • The dialogue (what the characters say).
  • How much kids and young people will enjoy the book.
  • If the book is right for its age group.

Books are listed in different groups, called categories:

  • Picture Books: These are books where the pictures and the story are equally important. They are for kids from babies up to 18 years old.
  • Junior Fiction: These are stories for children in primary and intermediate school (ages 7 to 13).
  • Young Adult Fiction: These are stories for older intermediate and high school students (ages 13 to 18).
  • Non-fiction: These are books that give true information in a clear and well-designed way. They are for kids and young adults aged 3 to 18.
  • Notable Te Reo Māori: This category is for books written in or translated into the Māori language, no matter the type of book.

Up to ten books can be chosen in each category. Sometimes, if there are many really great books, one or two more might be added. Books that are collections of stories (anthologies) can be included. Also, books by New Zealand writers and illustrators that were published in other countries can still win. Some books that don't make the main Notable Books List might get a "Special Mention" if they are important to their type of book.
