The strap-snouted brown snake (Pseudonaja aspidorhyncha) is a type of venomous snake. It belongs to a group of snakes called elapids. This snake lives in parts of South Australia, New South Wales, Queensland, and Victoria. It is closely related to other brown snakes like P. mengdeni and P. nuchalis.

What is a Strap-Snouted Brown Snake?

The strap-snouted brown snake is usually about 1.5 metres (5 feet) long. It has a long, thin body. Its head and neck blend together smoothly. A special feature is its snout, which looks a bit like a chisel.

The snake's upper body can be light to medium brown.

How to Identify This Snake?

Scientists use the number and pattern of scales on a snake's body to tell different species apart. The strap-snouted brown snake has:

  • 17 rows of scales around its middle body.
  • 207 to 226 scales on its belly.
  • 47 to 63 divided scales under its tail.
  • A divided scale near its vent (anal scale).
  • Six (sometimes five) scales above its mouth.
  • Seven (sometimes eight) scales below its mouth.
  • An undivided scale on its nose.
  • Two scales behind its eyes.

Where Do These Snakes Live?

The strap-snouted brown snake is found in central-southern Australia. You can find it from Hermidale in New South Wales to Penong in South Australia.
