The Strathmore Silverbacks are a Scottish rugby league team. They are part of the larger Strathmore RFC club. Their home is in Forfar, a town in Angus. The team plays in the top league for rugby league in Scotland, called the Scottish National League. You can find them playing their games at Inchmacoble Park.
Team History
The Silverbacks team started in 2015. It was created by David Vernon, who used to be a professional rugby league player. Stuart Gray from Strathmore RFC also helped start the team.
In their very first season in 2015, the Silverbacks did great! They won the Edinburgh 9s tournament. They also finished second in the main league, right behind the champions, Aberdeen Warriors. The Silverbacks even beat the Warriors twice that year.
The next year, 2016, they again finished second in the league. They played in the Grand Final in Montrose but lost that game.
Then, in 2017, the Silverbacks became the Scottish Champions! They had an exciting win against Edinburgh Eagles. This big victory meant they could play in the 2018 Challenge Cup, a very important competition.
Players Who Played for Their Country
Even though the club is quite new, some Silverbacks players have already played for Scotland. This means they are called "internationals."
- In September 2015, Murray Mitchell was chosen for the Scotland Under 19s team. He played in a match against Cumbria.
- The next year, in July, three players from the Silverbacks played for the Scotland Under 19s. These players were Ewan Maguire, Jack Wilson, and Darren Bell. They played against England Under 19s.
- In 2017, Niall Hall was asked to train with the Scotland students squad. This was to get ready for a big World Cup in Australia.
- In November 2017, Murray Mitchell, Niall Hall, and Ali Olivier were picked for the Scotland Under 23 team. They played in the Commonwealth 9s tournament in 2018.
