A Look Back in Time: Strehaia's History

Strehaia was first mentioned in old documents from the 1400s. For a while, it was considered a possible home for the "Bans" of Oltenia. A Ban was a very important leader, like a governor. Strehaia took over from another city, Severin, because of many attacks from the Ottoman Empire. Later, the main center moved to Craiova, and Strehaia became more of a quiet, rural place.

The famous Strehaia Monastery was built in 1645 by Matei Basarab, a prince of Wallachia. This old building is an important part of the town's history. In 1671, a cattle fair started in Strehaia. This was a regular event where people bought and sold animals. It helped the town grow and become more active.

In 1821, Strehaia was a place where small fights happened. These fights were between the "Pandurs" of Tudor Vladimirescu and soldiers loyal to Prince Scarlat Callimachi. The Pandurs were a group of soldiers who fought for change during an uprising in Wallachia.
