Alvy, also known as Stringtown, is a small community in West Virginia, United States. It is located in Tyler County. This area is not a city or town with its own local government. Instead, it is an unincorporated community. This means it is a group of homes and people living together without a separate town council.

Discovering Alvy: A West Virginia Community

Alvy is found along County Route 13. This road is also known as Indian Creek Road. The community is also near Indian Creek. It is about 16 miles (26 km) east-southeast of a place called Middlebourne.

Why is it Called Stringtown?

Alvy has an interesting nickname: Stringtown. This name came about during the oil boom days. This was around the 1890s to the 1910s. During this time, many people moved to the area. They came to work in the oil industry.

The population grew to an estimated 5,000 residents and temporary workers. These people did not live in a compact town. Instead, their homes and workplaces were "strung" out over the hills and hollows. This spread-out arrangement gave the community its unique nickname, Stringtown.

A Look at Alvy's Past

The community we know as Alvy today was once called Moore, Virginia. This name changed to Alvy around 1850. For many years, Alvy had its own post office. This post office helped people send and receive mail. It used the name Alvy for all its services. However, the post office eventually closed its doors. This happened on February 1, 1997.
