Stuart Conquest: A Chess Champion

Stuart Conquest has had a long and successful career in chess. He started playing at a young age and quickly showed great talent. His journey includes winning important championships and representing his country.

Early Chess Achievements

Stuart Conquest achieved his first major success when he was just 14 years old. In 1981, he won the World Youth Chess Championship in the under-16 age group. This was a big step in his chess career.

Later, in 1997, he became the British Rapidplay Chess Champion. Rapidplay chess is a faster version of the game. He also shared first place at the Hastings Premier tournament twice, in 1995 and 2000. In 2001, he won a strong tournament in Clichy, France.

Becoming a Grandmaster

Stuart Conquest earned the title of International Master in 1985. This is an important title below Grandmaster. He then achieved the highest title in chess, Grandmaster, in 1991. This title is given by the World Chess Federation (FIDE) to the best chess players.

His highest Elo rating was 2601, which he reached in October 2001. The Elo rating system measures a player's skill level. A higher number means a stronger player.

Later Successes and Roles

After a period where he didn't win as many tournaments, Stuart Conquest made a strong comeback in 2008. He won the British Chess Championship. He tied for first place and then won a special play-off match against Keith Arkell to claim the title. In May 2009, he also won the Capo d'Orso Open tournament.

Since the mid-1990s, Stuart Conquest has often been a member of the England chess team. He has represented his country at major events like the Olympiads and the European Team Chess Championships.

Besides playing, Stuart Conquest has taken on other important roles in the chess world. For many years, he has been a regular commentator, explaining chess games to audiences. Since 2011, he has also been the tournament director for the Gibraltar Chess Festival. This is a big annual chess event held in Gibraltar.
