Stuart William Hogg (born on 24 June 1992) is a Scottish professional rugby union player. He currently plays for Montpellier in France's Top 14 league.
Stuart Hogg has played for Scotland at the international level. His first big game was against Wales in the 2012 Six Nations Championship. He became Scotland's top try-scorer of all time.
He was named the Six Nations Player of the Tournament in both 2016 and 2017. Hogg was also chosen to play for the British & Irish Lions three times: in 2013, 2017, and 2021. In 2021, he played in two important Lions Test matches against South Africa.
Early Life and School
Stuart Hogg grew up in Hawick in the Scottish Borders. His father, John, played rugby for Hawick and later became a referee. Stuart's brother, Graham Hogg, also played rugby for Scotland in the IRB Sevens World Series. He also played for Scotland's under-18, under-19, and under-20 teams.
Stuart Hogg went to Trinity Primary School and then Hawick High School.
Rugby Union Career
Amateur Beginnings
Hogg started his rugby journey playing for Hawick Wanderers, Hawick, and Heriot's.
During the 2008–09 season, he was part of Stirling County in the Scottish Premiership. Stuart Hogg was also part of the Elite Development Programme run by Scottish Rugby. He signed his first professional contract at the end of 2011.
Professional Journey
Stuart Hogg first became well-known when he was named Player of the Year for Scotland's under-17 team. In 2010, he captained Scotland's under-18 team against Wales. He was also named man-of-the-match against France that same year.
Playing for Glasgow Warriors
Hogg made his first appearance for Glasgow Warriors in February 2011. This was in the Magners League. In the same month, he joined the Scotland under-20 team. He played five games in the under-20 Six Nations and the IRB Junior World Championship in 2011.
He played two games for the Warriors in the 2010–11 season. In the 2011–12 RaboDirect PRO12 season, he became the team's starting full-back. At the end of the 2012–13 season, he was named in the Pro12 Dream Team. In November 2014, Stuart Hogg signed a new contract to stay with Glasgow Warriors until May 2017. He signed another contract in 2016, keeping him there until the end of the 2018–19 season. In 2017, at just 24 years old, Hogg became the youngest player to reach 100 appearances for the club.
Moving to Exeter Chiefs
In November 2018, it was announced that Hogg would leave Glasgow Warriors after nine years. He joined Exeter Chiefs after the 2019 Rugby World Cup.
In 2020, Hogg helped Exeter Chiefs win both the European and English Premiership titles. He played a key role in their wins over Racing 92 in the European Champions Cup Final. He also helped them beat Wasps in the Gallagher Premiership Final.
Joining Montpellier
Stuart Hogg joined Montpellier in July 2024. He signed a two-year contract with the French club. He played his first competitive game for Montpellier on September 7, 2024.
Scotland National Team
Hogg played for Scotland at under-17, under-18, and under-20 levels. After these experiences, he earned his first full international cap.
Early International Years (2012–2014)
Hogg received his first cap for the Scotland national rugby union team in 2012. He was called up for the 2012 Six Nations squad. He made a strong impression in his first game against Wales in Cardiff. He came on as a substitute after an injury to another player. Hogg then started his first game against France, where he scored his first try for Scotland.
In the 2013 Six Nations, Hogg scored two more tries. One was against England and another was a long 95-meter intercept try against Italy. On March 8, 2014, he scored his fourth international try against France. A week later, he was sent off in a Six Nations game against Wales. This was for a dangerous tackle.
On June 8, 2014, Hogg played his first game after the red card against Wales. He scored his fifth international try against the US. On June 14, 2014, he kicked a crucial 43-meter penalty goal to help Scotland win against Canada. He scored his sixth try for Scotland against Argentina on June 20, 2014, helping Scotland win 21–18.
Hogg also played for Scotland's Sevens team in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. He scored one try in that competition. In Scotland's Autumn internationals in 2014, he scored two more tries. One was against Argentina and the other against Tonga.
Key Contributions (2015–2019)
In the 2015 Six Nations Championship, Hogg was a standout player for Scotland. He gained the most meters (442) and beat the most defenders (18). He also made many important tackles.
Domestically, 2015 was a great year for Hogg. Glasgow Warriors won their first ever Pro12 title. Hogg played in all five of Scotland's matches at the 2015 Rugby World Cup. Scotland reached the quarter-finals but were eliminated by Australia.
The 2016 Six Nations Championship saw Hogg score tries against France and Ireland. The try against Ireland was an amazing 55-meter individual effort. He also helped set up tries against France and Italy. After a public vote, Hogg was named the Six Nations Player of the Championship. He was the first Scottish player to win this award.
Hogg continued his excellent form in the 2017 Six Nations Championship. He scored two tries against Ireland and another against France. In the final game against Italy, he added 3 points with a kick. He received his second Player of the Championship award in a row, becoming only the second person to do so. Stuart Hogg was named man of the match against New Zealand on November 18, 2017. He is now seen as one of the best full-backs in international rugby.
In the 2019 Six Nations Championship, Hogg started Scotland's first two games. However, he suffered a shoulder injury in the game against Ireland. This injury meant he missed the rest of the championship.
Team Captaincy (2020–2023)
Hogg was named captain for the 2020 Six Nations Championship. He led Scotland in games against Ireland, England, Italy, and France. He scored Scotland's first try of the tournament in their 17–0 win over Italy. When the tournament restarted later in the year, he led Scotland to their first away victory in Wales in 18 years.
Hogg was a constant presence in Scotland's 2021 Six Nations Championship. He captained the team to memorable away wins against England (their first since 1983) and France (their first since 1999). During this campaign, Hogg scored two tries against Wales.
On November 20, 2021, during Scotland's match against Japan, Hogg scored his 25th international try. This made him Scotland's all-time record try scorer.
Hogg captained Scotland to their first back-to-back win against England in four decades. This happened during the first game of the 2022 Six Nations. On March 27, 2023, Hogg announced he would retire from professional rugby after the upcoming Rugby World Cup. However, he later changed his mind and announced his immediate retirement on July 9, 2023. This was two months before the World Cup began.
British & Irish Lions
Hogg was one of four Scottish players chosen for the Lions squad for their 2013 tour to Australia. He was the youngest player on that tour.
He was also named as one of two Scottish players in the squad for the 2017 tour to New Zealand. Hogg got injured during his third game on the tour and had to leave before the main Test Matches began.
In May 2021, Hogg was selected for the Lions for a third time. This was for the 2021 tour to South Africa. After missing some games due to isolation, he was chosen as full-back for the first Test match. He played the entire game as the Lions won. He also played the full 80 minutes of the second Test the following week.
Personal Life
Stuart Hogg was given the Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) award in the 2024 New Year Honours. This was for his great contributions to rugby union football.
Hogg's first child was born in late 2015. He married Gillian Smith in August 2016. He became a father for a second time in 2017.
