Stuart William Hogg (born 24 June 1992) is a Scottish professional rugby union player. He plays as a fullback or fly-half. He currently plays for Montpellier in France.
Stuart Hogg has played for the Scotland team many times. He made his first international appearance against Wales in 2012. He became Scotland's all-time top try-scorer.
Hogg was named the best player in the Six Nations Championship in both 2016 and 2017. He was also chosen to play for the British & Irish Lions three times (in 2013, 2017, and 2021). In 2021, he played in two Test matches for the Lions against South Africa.
Early Life and School
Stuart Hogg grew up in Hawick in the Scottish Borders. His father, John, also played rugby as a full-back for Hawick. His brother, Graham Hogg, also played rugby for Scotland's youth teams.
Stuart went to Trinity Primary School and then Hawick High School.
Rugby Union Career
Amateur Rugby
Hogg played for local teams like Hawick Wanderers, Hawick, and Heriot's. In the 2008–09 season, he played for Stirling County in the Scottish Premiership.
He was part of a special program by Scottish Rugby to develop young players. He signed his first professional contract at the end of 2011.
Professional Rugby Clubs
Stuart Hogg first became well-known when he was named Player of the Year for Scotland's under-17 team. He later captained Scotland's under-18 team.
Playing for Glasgow Warriors
Hogg started playing for Glasgow Warriors in February 2011. In the same month, he joined the Scotland under-20 team. He played five games for them in the Under-20 Six Nations and the Junior World Championship in 2011.
He became the main full-back for Glasgow Warriors in the 2011–12 season. In 2014, he signed a new contract to stay with the Warriors until 2017. He signed another contract in 2016. In 2017, at just 24 years old, Hogg became the youngest player to play 100 games for Glasgow Warriors.
Moving to Exeter Chiefs
In November 2018, it was announced that Hogg would leave Glasgow Warriors after nine years. He joined Exeter Chiefs after the 2019 Rugby World Cup.
With Exeter Chiefs, Hogg won two major titles in 2020. They won the European Champions Cup by beating Racing 92. They also won the Gallagher Premiership Final against Wasps. Hogg played a key part in these victories.
Joining Montpellier
Stuart Hogg joined Montpellier in July 2024. He signed a two-year contract with the French club. He played his first game for them on September 7, 2024.
Scotland National Team
Hogg played for Scotland at under-17, under-18, and under-20 levels before playing for the senior national team.
Early International Years (2012–2014)
Hogg earned his first cap for the Scotland national rugby union team in 2012. He was called up for the 2012 Six Nations after playing well for Glasgow. He made his debut against Wales as a substitute. He then started his first game against France and scored his first try for Scotland in that match.
In the 2013 Six Nations, Hogg scored two more tries. One was against England and another was a long 95-meter intercept try against Italy.
In 2014, he scored his fourth international try against France. Later that year, he was sent off in a Six Nations game against Wales. This meant he could not play in the next game. After this, he scored his fifth international try against the USA. He also kicked a crucial penalty to help Scotland win against Canada. He scored his sixth try against Argentina.
Hogg also played for the Scotland 7s team in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. He scored one try in that competition. In late 2014, he scored two more tries for Scotland against Argentina and Tonga.
Success and Awards (2015–2019)
In the 2015 Six Nations Championship, Hogg was a standout player for Scotland. He gained the most metres, beat the most defenders, and made many carries. He also made important tackles to stop opponents from scoring.
In the same year, his club team, Glasgow Warriors, won their first ever Pro12 title. Hogg played in all five of Scotland's matches at the 2015 Rugby World Cup. Scotland reached the quarter-finals but lost to Australia.
The 2016 Six Nations Championship was another strong tournament for Hogg. He scored tries against France and Ireland. His try against Ireland was a fantastic 55-meter solo effort. He also helped set up tries for his teammates. After the tournament, he was voted the Six Nations Player of the Championship. He was the first Scottish player to win this award.
Hogg continued his excellent form in the 2017 Six Nations Championship. He scored two tries against Ireland and another against France. He also kicked three points against Italy. He won the Player of the Championship award for the second year in a row, which is a rare achievement. In November 2017, he was named man of the match against New Zealand. He was seen as one of the best fullbacks in the world.
In the 2019 Six Nations, Hogg played in the first two games. However, he got a shoulder injury in the second game against Ireland. This injury meant he missed the rest of the championship.
Captaincy and Record Breaker (2020–2023)
Hogg was named captain for the 2020 Six Nations Championship. He led Scotland in games against Ireland, England, Italy, and France. He scored Scotland's first try of the tournament against Italy, running from his own half. He also led Scotland to their first away win in Wales in 18 years.
Hogg was captain throughout Scotland's 2021 Six Nations Championship. He led the team to historic away victories against England (first time since 1983) and France (first time since 1999). He scored two tries against Wales and kicked many points against Ireland and Italy.
His strong performance in 2021 made him a top choice for the British & Irish Lions tour to South Africa.
On 20 November 2021, during Scotland's match against Japan, Hogg scored his 25th international try. This made him Scotland's all-time record try scorer.
Hogg captained Scotland to their first back-to-back win against England in 40 years in the 2022 Six Nations.
On 27 March 2023, Hogg announced he planned to retire from professional rugby after the 2023 Rugby World Cup. However, he later changed his mind and announced his immediate retirement on 9 July 2023, before the World Cup began. He mentioned wanting to start a new career path.
British & Irish Lions
Hogg was one of four Scottish players chosen for the Lions squad for their 2013 tour to Australia. He was the youngest player on that tour.
He was selected again for the 2017 tour to New Zealand. Unfortunately, he got injured during his third game on the tour and had to leave before the main Test matches.
In May 2021, Hogg was chosen for the Lions for a third time for the 2021 tour to South Africa. After missing some games due to isolation, he was picked as full-back for the first Test match. He played the whole game as the Lions won. He also played the full 80 minutes in the second Test the following week.
Personal Life
Stuart Hogg was given the title of Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2024. This was for his great contributions to rugby union.
Hogg became a father for the first time in late 2015. He married Gillian Smith in August 2016, and they had a second child in 2017. He later became a father for a fourth time in 2023.
