Purpose Drainage Windmill

The Stubb Drainage Windmill is a historic building located near Hickling in Norfolk, England. It's a special type of windmill that was used to pump water away from low-lying land. This helped farmers grow crops. The windmill is considered an important historical site. It was officially protected as a Grade II listed building in 1987. This means it's a building of special interest. Long ago, there were around 200 windmills like this in the Broadlands area. Today, Stubb Windmill needs some care to keep it from falling apart.

A Look Back in Time

Stubb Windmill is a 'towermill'. It was built between 1795 and 1825. A man named Sir George Berney Brograve had it built. He also built several other drainage windmills in the area.

Why Was It Built?

The main job of Stubb Windmill was to move water. Water that was pumped out of the land by the mill flowed into a channel called Meadow Dyke. Other drains, like the Commissioners Drain, were also built at that time. All this work helped to dry out the land.

What Happened to the Broads?

Because of this drainage work, three smaller lakes, or 'broads', disappeared. They were called Wigg's, Gag's, and Hare Park Broads. The land where they once were became dry enough for farming.

Why is it Important?

Stubb Windmill is a reminder of how people used to manage land. It shows how windmills were vital for farming in places like Norfolk. Even though it needs repairs, it's a valuable part of history.
