Studio 58 is a special school in Vancouver, British Columbia. It's part of Langara College. This school teaches students how to become professional actors and theatre production experts. It's known as one of the best theatre schools in Canada. It's also the only school in Western Canada that offers a "conservatory-style" program. This means it gives very focused and intense training in theatre.
Each year, many students from all over Canada try out for Studio 58. Only sixteen new students are accepted each semester. There are two start times: one in the fall and one in the spring. Studio 58 has its own small theatre. They put on four big plays every year. They also have a smaller show called "Risky Nights." This show is created by the students themselves. Professional directors and designers work on these plays. Sometimes, guest performers also join in. The plays at Studio 58 are open to everyone. News reporters in Vancouver often write reviews about them.

The Story of Studio 58
How the School Started
Studio 58 began in 1965. It was a small course about theatre arts. It was first held at the King Edward Campus of Vancouver City College. This college is now called Vancouver Community College. A person named Antony Holland led the course. Over time, it grew into a full program.
In 1970, the theatre program moved to a new place. This new place was on the Langara Campus. That's when it became known as Studio 58. The name came from the room number of the first theatre space they used.
Changes in Leadership
In 1985, Antony Holland left the school. Kathryn Shaw took over as the Artistic Director. She retired in 2020. After her, Courtenay Dobbie became the Artistic Director. Sadly, Courtenay Dobbie passed away in 2024. Now, Raes Calvert and Shizuka Kai are the Interim Co-Artistic Directors. This means they are leading the school for a short time.
Celebrating 50 Years
The 2015-2016 school year was very special for Studio 58. They celebrated their 50th anniversary!
