In the year 2000, about 267 people lived there. For the 2010 census, this area was divided. It became two separate CDPs: Study Butte and Terlingua.

The total area of this CDP was about 16 square miles (41.3 square kilometers). All of this area was land, with no large bodies of water.

Study Butte-Terlingua was first listed as a census-designated place in the 2000 U.S. Census. Before the 2010 U.S. Census, it was split into the Study Butte CDP and Terlingua CDP.

In 2000, there were 267 people living in the CDP. These people lived in 104 households. About 60 of these households were families. The area had about 17 people per square mile (6.5 per square kilometer).

The community was diverse. About 51.69% of the people were of Hispanic or Latino background. The rest of the population included people who identified as White, African American, and Native American. Some people also identified with two or more races.

About 29.2% of the population was under 18 years old. About 10.5% of the people were 65 years or older. The average age of people living there was 34 years.

Education in Study Butte-Terlingua

Students in Study Butte-Terlingua were served by the Terlingua Common School District. The local high school was Big Bend High School.

Before the fall of 1996, high school students attended Alpine High School. This school was located in the Alpine Independent School District. The Terlingua Common School District used to have two separate schools: Big Bend High and Terlingua Elementary.
