The Subantarctic rayadito (Aphrastura subantarctica) is a special kind of bird. It belongs to the Furnariidae family, which includes ovenbirds. This bird lives only on the Diego Ramírez Islands, a group of islands at the very southern tip of Chile.

Discovering the Subantarctic Rayadito
For a long time, scientists thought the Subantarctic rayadito was the same as another bird called the thorn-tailed rayadito (Aphrastura spinicauda). But in 2022, a group of scientists led by Ricardo Rozzi found some important differences.
They studied the birds' genes, how they looked, and how they behaved. They discovered that the Subantarctic rayadito is a bit heavier and has a shorter tail than the thorn-tailed rayadito. Because of these differences, they decided it was a completely new species!
Where the Subantarctic Rayadito Lives
The Subantarctic rayadito lives in a very unique place: the Diego Ramírez Islands. These islands don't have many trees. This is different from the thorn-tailed rayadito, which usually lives in forests. The Subantarctic rayadito has adapted to live in the open, non-forested areas of its island home.
