Exploring the Geography of Sud
The Sud Department is located in the southern part of Haiti. It shares its northern borders with the Grand'Anse and Nippes departments. To its east, you'll find the Sud-Est Department. The vast Caribbean Sea borders the department to both the west and the south.
Mountains and Rivers in Sud
A major mountain range in Haiti, called the Massif de la Hotte, runs through the middle of the Sud Department from west to east. Because of these mountains, the rivers in this area are usually short. Some of the important rivers you can find here include Acul du Sud, Torbeck, Ravine du Sud, de l'Ilet, Cavaillon, des Anglais, Port à Piment, Saut Mathurine, and de Tiburon. These rivers are important for the local communities.
Population and People of Sud
According to a count done in 2003, the Sud Department had a population of about 621,651 people. This included slightly more men than women. Most of the people in Sud live in rural areas. Only about 17.63% of the population lived in cities and towns at that time. This shows that many communities in Sud are spread out in the countryside.
How Sud is Governed
The Sud Department is divided into smaller administrative areas to help manage it. These areas are similar to districts and municipalities you might know.
Arrondissements and Communes
The department is split into five main areas called arrondissements. Each arrondissement is then further divided into smaller parts called communes, which are like local towns or municipalities. In total, there are 18 communes in the Sud Department.
