Sugar Bear is a famous cartoon mascot for a breakfast cereal called Golden Crisp. He is a friendly bear who loves his cereal! He was first known as the mascot for Super Sugar Crisp.

The Story of Sugar Bear

Sugar Bear first appeared in the 1940s. He was created for a cereal called Sugar Crisp, which later became Golden Crisp. A graphic designer named Robert "Bob" Irwin designed him.

In the old TV commercials, Sugar Bear had a special voice. It was done by Gerry Matthews, who made him sound like a famous singer named Bing Crosby. Sugar Bear would often sing about how much he loved his cereal. He even sang to the tune of "Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho".

In 1964, Sugar Bear became a character in a Saturday-morning cartoon show called Linus the Lionhearted. Many characters on this show were mascots for different cereals.

Sugar Bear's Powers and Friends

Sugar Bear usually wears a blue turtleneck sweater with his name on it. In the 1980s, if he took a bite of Super Sugar Crisp, he would turn into a strong "Super Bear"! This strong version of him would fight monsters trying to steal his cereal.

Sometimes, Sugar Bear would use simple moves to outsmart other animals. For example, in some commercials, he rode an elephant through a jungle of tigers. He also acted like a matador to a big bull and even played with sharks in the ocean.

Sugar Bear had a few rivals. One was an old woman called Granny Goodwitch. They would often have funny contests, using tricks and even some magic or cool technology to see who would get the cereal. But Granny Goodwitch was never truly mad at Sugar Bear. Other rivals included Blob, who liked strange breakfasts, and Sugar Fox, who always tried to stop Sugar Bear from getting his cereal but never succeeded.

Sugar Bear Toys and Art

Because Sugar Bear was so popular, there were sometimes special toys given away with the cereal. In the 1960s, you could get a yo-yo or a padlock. In 1993, there was even a Christmas ornament where he was dressed as Santa Claus. Small talking plush dolls were also made in the early 1990s. More recently, a Wacky Wobbler toy was released.

Today, an artist named Seymour Schachter draws Sugar Bear for the cereal boxes.

The Sugar Bears Music Group

In 1971, a music group called The Sugar Bears was formed. It was a bubblegum pop group, which means they made catchy, upbeat songs. A special record made of cardboard was printed on the back of thousands of Super Sugar Crisp cereal boxes! This record showed four members: Sugar Bear, Honey Bear, Shoobee Bear, and Doobee Bear.

There were five different songs on these cardboard records. The group also released a full music album called Presenting the Sugar Bears. They had three single songs released too. One of their songs, "You Are the One," even reached number 51 on the Billboard music charts.
