Sugar Grove is a small place in Watauga County, North Carolina, in the United States. It's called an unincorporated community, which means it's not an official town with its own local government.

The name "Sugar Grove" comes from the many sugar maple trees that grow there. These trees are famous for their sweet sap, which is used to make maple syrup! Sugar Grove is located along US 321, west of nearby places like Vilas and Boone. It sits right by the banks of Cove Creek.

History of Sugar Grove

How Sugar Grove Started

Sugar Grove began in 1837. That year, a man named John Mast opened the first post office in the area. This was an important step in making Sugar Grove a recognized community.

Sugar Grove During the Civil War

The American Civil War happened between 1861 and 1865. During this time, a group of soldiers from the Confederate side, called Company E of the 37th Regiment, was formed in Sugar Grove in September 1861.

Later in the war, from 1864 to 1865, a local defense group known as the home guard battalion of Watauga was stationed at Camp Mast, which was close to Sugar Grove. On February 5, 1865, Camp Mast was surrounded by about 100 Union soldiers. The soldiers at Camp Mast decided to surrender. After they surrendered, they were allowed to go home.

Early Industries and Important Buildings

In 1915, the first cheese factory in the area was built in Sugar Grove. This was an important business for the community at the time.

Some buildings in Sugar Grove are very old and important. They are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are special places that are protected because of their history. These include the Cove Creek High School, the Ben Farthing Farm, and the Ward Family House.
