Growing Up: Suhaimi's Early Life
Suhaimi was born in Punggol, Singapore, on September 4, 1969. He was the seventh of nine children in his family. His mother, Fatimah Yusof, was a homemaker, and his father, Yusof Bujang, worked as a technician. When Suhaimi was sixteen, his family moved to Hougang.
Even though he was shy at first, Suhaimi discovered his talent for acting in secondary school. His teacher chose him to perform a skit for a Teachers' Day concert. He was nervous but came up with a funny character called "Montfort Jackson." This character was a spoof of the famous singer Michael Jackson. His performance made all his friends laugh a lot!
From Radio to TV Star
Suhaimi really impressed a radio veteran named Zakiah Halim at a Malay debate competition. Because of this, Halim offered Suhaimi a part-time job as a host on a radio show for teens called Majalah Remaja.
After finishing his studies and national service, Suhaimi joined the Singapore Broadcasting Corporation (SBC), which is now called Mediacorp. He became a full-time radio presenter and soon hosted the morning radio show. Later, SBC's TV department gave him his first TV job. He co-hosted Potret Keluarga, a weekly family program. He then got another hosting job on an entertainment show called Hiburan Minggu Ini.
Suhaimi was offered a role as Sulaiman Yusof, a maintenance man, in the TV show Living with Lydia. He acted alongside the Hong Kong comedian Lydia Shum. He took the job, and his character became very popular with viewers. This was Suhaimi's first role on English television.
In 2001, Suhaimi decided to leave radio to focus more on TV. He had already become an assistant program director at the Malay radio station Warna 94.2FM. After that, he acted in two more TV shows on Mediacorp Channel 5. He played Sgt Dollah Abu Bakar in Police & Thief and the "mat rock" reporter Jojo Joget in The Noose.
In early 2012, Suhaimi shared his thoughts on social media about how Mediacorp Suria could show more appreciation for local actors. He suggested that Malay Singaporean actors might find more opportunities in Malaysia. This created a lot of discussion in the local Malay entertainment world. Suhaimi later explained that he meant it as helpful feedback and not as a personal attack.
Suhaimi has also directed and produced a 15-episode comedy series for Astro. He also had his first role on the big screen as a murder suspect in the Malay suspense film Psycho.
Suhaimi as a Businessman
Suhaimi and his wife run a company called Q & Que. This company plans events and produces shows. Suhaimi is the creative director there.
Suhaimi also produces and sells DVDs of his comedy shows. His first DVD, Keramat Bernisan, was a live recording released in 2004. It sold 25,000 copies in Singapore in just three weeks! He then made a series of popular comedy DVDs called "Takleh Angkat." These became a favorite for the local Malay community and even abroad. More than 150,000 official copies of Suhaimi's DVDs have been sold.
