Sulene's Music Journey
Starting Out in Music
Sulene Fleming began singing when she was very young. She loved listening to her mother's music collection. This helped her discover many different styles like soul, funk, and disco.
Some of her biggest inspirations were singers like Phyllis Hyman, Betty Wright, Aretha Franklin, and Chaka Khan. When she was 15, she started performing with local bands in Bradford. She sang both lead and background vocals.
By age 18, Sulene was working as a session singer. This means she recorded songs for other songwriters and producers. She worked with big music companies like EMI, Peer, and Sony Music.
Working with Producers and Bands
In 1998, Sulene worked with a production team called Stargate Productions. She recorded with them for two years in Norway.
She also teamed up with The New Master Sounds. In 2001, she wrote the lyrics for their song "Turn This Thing Around." She toured with them for a few years and they released another song called "Get Back." After that, The New Master Sounds became an instrumental band, meaning they played music without singing.
Sulene spent three years touring with various bands. She also started writing songs for music production companies.
Forming Sweet Suzi and Dance Music
In 2005, Sulene started her own band called Sweet Suzi. It was a pop/rock band. They wrote many songs and toured with groups like INME and Terrorvision. The band broke up in 2007.
After Sweet Suzi, Sulene went back to touring with pop bands. In 2008, she sang on the song "Land Of Dance" by Sy & Unknown. This was her first time working in the world of dance music.
Moving to London and New Collaborations
In 2009, Sulene moved to London. She joined a band called The Fantastics. In 2010, a song she helped write, "Sunshine In This Heart Of Mine," was featured on a popular music compilation.
In 2011, The Fantastics released an album called All The People. Sulene wrote four of the songs on this album. She still performs and writes with The Fantastics today.
In 2012, Sulene worked with T-Roy from Broadcite music. They created a deep house song called "A New Love." Later, in 2015, they released another deep house collection called "The Rhythm."
Sulene also sang backup vocals for many international artists. These included Leroy Hutson, Deneice Williams, and Barbara Mason. In 2015, she toured Japan with Citrus Sun, a band led by Bluey from Incognito. She also sang for Incognito later that year.
Albums and The Brand New Heavies
Sulene released her album Loveland in 2015. She wrote it with Nick Van Gelder, who was the original drummer for Jamiroquai. In 2016, she teamed up with Dimitris Dimopoulos. They released the album Sparkle, which became number one on the UK Soul Chart.
In 2016, Sulene toured with The Brand New Heavies. She was their lead singer for the European part of their tour. They performed in many countries, including the UK, Spain, Germany, and Japan.
Recent Projects
Since 2019, Sulene has been working with Dr Robert from The Blow Monkeys. She has sung on several projects for Monks Road Social, including the albums Out Of Bounds and Humanism.
Through this work, she met Matt Deighton, the lead singer of Mother Earth. Sulene now sings with Mother Earth. The band also includes Mick Talbot from The Style Council.
