What's in a Name?
The name "Sulzberg" was first written down in old papers in the year 1249. Around the year 1400, people living there were called "Smaltzhuben uff the Sultzberg." These people had to give lard (a type of fat) and cheese to the Count of Bregenz. This shows how important farming was back then.
Culture and History
Sulzberg has several interesting cultural sites, especially churches and old trees.
Important Churches
- Parish Church of St. Laurentius: This church was made bigger between 1828 and 1829. It was designed by Alois Negrelli and used parts of an older building. The church was updated again from 1988 to 1991.
- Chapel of St. Leonhard: This chapel, built in 1497, is one of 13 chapels in Sulzberg. It's near the main parish church, on the road to Doren. This chapel used to belong to a monastery far away in Kempten (Allgäu). During a big war called the Thirty Years' War in 1647, soldiers from Sweden used the chapel as a stable for their horses! Luckily, its special old paintings (frescoes), altars, and wooden ceilings from the early Baroque period are still there. For a long time, people visited this chapel as a holy place. After being closed for many years, it was fully repaired and reopened in November 2006.
- Parish Church Sulzberg-Thal: Another important church in the Sulzberg-Thal area.
The Marienlinde Tree
The Marienlinde is a very old lime tree, more than 400 years old! Inside its trunk, there is a statue of Mary. There's also a special message carved into the tree: "Maria vom Sieg, beende den Krieg und schütze uns mit deinem Kinde aus der Marienlinde." This means: "Mary of victory, end the war and protect us with your child from the Marienlinde."
Sulzberg's Coat of Arms
The coat of arms for Sulzberg shows a black ox head looking straight at you. Below the ox head, there's a green mountain with three peaks. It's believed that a church historian named Andreas Ulmer designed this symbol. The ox and mountain likely show how important farming and the land are to the people of Sulzberg.
