Summerford is a small place in Ohio, United States. It's called an unincorporated community, which means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government. Summerford is found in Somerford Township, within Madison County. You can find it where two main roads meet: U.S. Route 40 and State Route 56.
The name "Summerford" comes from early settlers. They were traveling west and had to stop because a creek was too high to cross. They waited for the water to go down. When it was safe, they crossed the creek in the summer. This act of crossing a creek is called "fording," so they made a summer ford.
A Look Back: Summerford's History
Summerford was first planned out by a person named Joseph Christian between 1833 and 1834. Back then, it was known as Somerford.
A post office was opened in Summerford on June 6, 1837. This was a place where people could send and receive letters and packages. By 1875, Summerford had grown a bit. It had two churches, a drug store, two grocery stores, a hotel, and two blacksmith shops. Blacksmiths were important because they made and repaired things out of metal, like tools and horse shoes. At that time, about 20 people lived in Summerford.
The post office in Summerford closed on December 15, 1905. Today, mail service for Summerford is handled through the nearby town of London.
