History of Sun Prairie
The story of Sun Prairie began in 1837. The President at the time, Martin Van Buren, asked a group of 45 men to build a new capital city in Madison. These men, led by Augustus A. Bird, started their journey from Milwaukee on May 26, 1837.
They traveled for many days through the rain. Finally, on June 9, they reached the edge of a wide, open field called a prairie. For the first time in days, the sun was shining brightly! To remember this happy moment, they carved the words "Sun Prairie" into a tree.
Two years later, in 1839, Charles Bird came back to this sunny spot and became the very first person to settle there. The official Town of Sun Prairie was created on February 2, 1846.
