What You Can Do at Suncadia
Suncadia was a big project that cost about $1 billion. It was built by two companies, Jeld-Wen and Lowe Enterprises. They wanted to create a fun place for people to visit and live.
Here are some cool things you can find there:
- A fancy mountain lodge with rooms and places for meetings.
- A spa where you can relax, inspired by mountain springs.
- A sports center with swimming pools, both inside and outside.
- An outdoor area for concerts or shows, next to a lake. In winter, you can even go ice skating on the lake!
- Lots of trails for walking, biking, or exploring.
- Three golf courses for playing golf.
- About 2,000 homes for people to live in.
Suncadia is also home to Swiftwater Cellars. This is a special place where they make wine.
There were plans to build a village center with restaurants and shops. This was supposed to be ready by 2016. However, as of June 2019, it had not been finished.
Suncadia's Land and History
Suncadia has a lot of open space. This includes a 1,200-acre (4.9 km2) area along the Cle Elum River. This river area is still open for everyone to enjoy. It's part of a special agreement called the Suncadia Conservancy. This agreement involves Suncadia, Washington's Department of Fish and Wildlife, and the Yakama Nation. The Yakama Nation is a group of Native American people.
A local group called RIDGE helped make sure that the community's interests were heard. They wanted to protect the river corridor during the development of Suncadia.
Suncadia was first called "MountainStar." It was built on land that used to be forests. This land was bought in 1996 from a company called Plum Creek Timber Company.
