Sunrise was a popular British TV show that helped people start their day with news. It was a breakfast programme shown on Sky News for many years. The show ran from February 6, 1989, until October 13, 2019.
After Sunrise ended, new shows took its place. These included The Early Rundown and Kay Burley @ Breakfast during the week. On Fridays and weekends, Sky News @ Breakfast became the new morning show.

The History of Sunrise
Sunrise began in February 1989. Back then, it aired for a long time each morning, from 5:00 AM to 9:30 AM.
Early Years and Graphics
In 1991, Sunrise was one of only two shows on Sky News to have its own special look. This means it had unique graphics, like how the titles and information appeared on screen. However, these graphics were quickly changed because viewers and staff thought they were too bright. Since then, Sunrise has mostly used the same graphics as the rest of Sky News.
Sometimes, Sunrise would have small changes to the main Sky News look. For example, in 1997, it had its own version of the opening title sequence. In 2005, it used a special version of the Sky News globe logo.
Changes in Presenters and Times
When Sky News changed its look on October 24, 2005, some new presenters joined Sunrise. Eamonn Holmes and Lorna Dunkley became the main weekday hosts. Steve Gaisford and Emma Crosby presented on weekends. Jacquie Beltrao gave sports updates during the week. At this time, the show's length changed to 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM.
In January 2007, Lorna Dunkley moved to weekend news. Charlotte Hawkins then joined Eamonn Holmes as a new co-host for Sunrise.
In March 2014, Charlotte Hawkins left Sky News. Isabel Webster took her place as co-host later that month.
The weekend shows also had changes. Before 2012, Mark Longhurst and Gillian Joseph were the weekend presenters. In 2012, Stephen Dixon replaced Mark Longhurst for the Friday to Sunday shows. Mark Longhurst then moved to present the weekend evening news. Charlie Thomas continued to give sports updates.
Later Years and Rebranding
In October 2016, Sunrise changed its look and presenters again. Sarah-Jane Mee and Jonathan Samuels hosted from Monday to Thursday. Stephen Dixon and Isabel Webster hosted from Friday to Sunday. The show also became longer, finishing at 10:00 AM.
In August 2017, Sunrise got a new logo and another new look. During the week, only Sarah-Jane Mee presented most of the show, with Jonathan Samuels reading the headlines. However, the weekend shows still had two presenters.
In January 2019, the Sunday to Friday shows went back to their original 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM time. The Saturday show continued to run from 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM.
For many years, Kay Burley often presented the Christmas editions of Sunrise.
The Sunrise Studio
On February 5, 2009, Sunrise started broadcasting from a new part of the Sky News Centre. This area was sometimes called the "shoebox." This change happened on the 20th anniversary of Sky News and when the main studio was updated.
On December 10, 2012, the Sunrise studio was refreshed. It got a new blue lit desk and a red sofa. The show also received a new logo, but it only appeared on the studio's plasma screen.
On February 9, 2015, Sunrise had to move to the main Sky News desk because its usual studio flooded. This move then became permanent.
Between October 2016 and November 2017, Sunrise was broadcast from Studio 21 at Sky Central. On November 18, the show moved back to Sky News Centre. This was while work was being done in Studio 21 and a new studio for Sunrise was being built.
On January 17, 2018, Sunrise began broadcasting from Studio 6 at Sky Studios. This studio had a "virtual space." This meant presenters could move away from the main desk for different parts of the show, like sports and weather.
The very last episode of Sunrise aired on October 13, 2019. It was presented by Stephen Dixon and Gillian Joseph. After the show ended, weekday host Sarah-Jane Mee moved to present an afternoon show. Stephen Dixon and Gillian Joseph continued to present morning news on Sky News @ Breakfast.
Where Sunrise Was Broadcast
Sunrise was sometimes shown on Sky One over the years, most recently in February 2016. The first hour of the show (6:00 AM) was also broadcast daily on Channel 5 from 2002 to 2006. It continued to be shown on Channel 5 on Saturdays until 2008.
