History of Sunset
How Sunset Got Its Name
Have you ever wondered how places get their names? A post office called Sunset opened here in 1888. It served the community until 1900. People believe the name "Sunset" might have been brought from another town in the United States that already had the same name. It was a unique and "fanciful" name for a small store and post office back then.
The Famous Sunset Bridge
The Sunset Bridge is a very important landmark in the area. It crosses the Pomme de Terre River. The first version of this bridge was built in 1885. It was the very first "iron" bridge ever built in Polk County!
The bridge you see today was protected in 2016. This was done with a special project to keep the riverbanks strong. Since 2001, students from Halfway High School have helped keep the bridge looking great. They decorate it with artwork and make sure it stays free of graffiti.
Fun at Sunset Park
The Sunset Park Access is a popular place for people who love the outdoors. It's a great spot to get into the river for boating and fishing. The park has a special ramp that makes it easy to launch boats.
The Pomme de Terre River near Sunset is known as a good place for new canoeists. If you're just learning how to canoe, this part of the river is often calm and easy to navigate. It's a perfect spot for a fun day on the water!
