Sunshine is a small area, also called a suburb, located in New South Wales, Australia. It's part of the City of Lake Macquarie and sits on a piece of land that sticks out into the western side of Lake Macquarie. It's just east of a town called Morisset. Long, long ago, the Awabakal people were the very first people to live in this beautiful area.

About Sunshine

Sunshine is a quiet suburb that is mostly surrounded by water. It's known for its peaceful setting right on the edge of Lake Macquarie.

Where is Sunshine?

Sunshine is located in the Hunter Region of New South Wales. It's on a small peninsula, which means it's a piece of land almost surrounded by water. This peninsula reaches out into Lake Macquarie, which is a very large coastal saltwater lake. The town of Morisset is only about 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) to the west.

Who Lived Here First?

Before European settlers arrived, the land where Sunshine now sits was home to the Awabakal people. They are the traditional owners of this land and have lived in the Lake Macquarie area for thousands of years. They had a deep connection to the land and the lake, using its resources for food and shelter.

What People Did Long Ago

When European settlers first came to Sunshine, they started different kinds of work to make a living. Some of the early jobs and activities in the area included:

  • Fishing: With Lake Macquarie right there, fishing was a natural way to get food and earn money.
  • Timbercutting: The area had many trees, so cutting timber (wood) was an important industry. The wood was used for building and other purposes.
  • Farming: People grew crops and raised animals on small farms to feed themselves and their families. This is called subsistence farming.
  • Boatbuilding: Because of the lake, building boats was also a useful skill and business for getting around and for fishing.

These early industries helped the community of Sunshine grow and develop over time.
