The Super Bowl XLVIII halftime show was a huge musical event! It happened on February 2, 2014, at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. This exciting show was part of Super Bowl XLVIII, the big football championship game.

The main performer was the famous singer Bruno Mars with his band, The Hooligans. They also had special guest performers, the rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers. When it first aired, this halftime show was watched by more people than any other Super Bowl halftime show before it. A massive 115.3 million people tuned in! Later, other Super Bowl halftime shows had even more viewers.

The show was put together by Ricky Kirshner and directed by Hamish Hamilton. It was so good that it was nominated for two 2014 Primetime Emmy Awards. These awards are for excellent television shows. The performance also caused a lot of buzz online, with 2.2 million tweets being sent during the show.

Getting Ready for the Show

Bruno Mars was announced as the main halftime performer in September 2013. This news was shared during a live TV show called Fox NFL Sunday in Times Square, New York City.

The NFL's entertainment team started working with Bruno Mars and his team around Thanksgiving. They spent the rest of 2013 planning the songs, the stage, and who would perform. In January 2014, it was announced that Mars had personally invited the Red Hot Chili Peppers to join him.

There were some small disagreements during rehearsals. The NFL wanted the audience to wear special light-up bracelets. Bruno Mars thought it was more important to focus on the music. He believed that if he and his band practiced a lot, the show would be amazing no matter what. He said, "Every smoke machine and laser light is just a bonus."

How the Show Was Made

The halftime show was produced by Ricky Kirshner and directed by Hamish Hamilton. Bruno Mars and his eight-person band, The Hooligans, wore custom-made clothes. These outfits were designed by Saint Laurent by Hedi Slimane. Their style was inspired by famous musicians like Prince, Michael Jackson, and James Brown. Bruno Mars wore a cool gold jacket, a white shirt, black pants, and a skinny tie.

Bruno Mars made history at this Super Bowl. He was the youngest artist ever to be the only main performer for the Super Bowl Halftime Show. He started the show with an amazing drum solo. His drum kit was designed to honor his late mother, Bernadette Hernandez. The artwork on the drums looked like his arm tattoo, which is also dedicated to his mom.

During his song "Just the Way You Are," Bruno Mars stood in the middle of the field. Behind him, there was the biggest fireworks display ever seen at a Super Bowl.

A company from Montreal called PixMob helped light up the audience. They gave out special "video ski hats" to everyone watching the game. These hats had small LED lights and could receive signals. Infrared signals from around the stadium controlled the lights. This turned the whole audience into a giant "screen" of moving lights.

Starting with this show, the halftime show logo no longer appeared at the beginning. Also, the opening announcement changed. It became "The National Football League welcomes you to the (sponsor) Super Bowl (Numeral) Halftime Show."
